If a socket tester does not display Earth Loop Impedance, it should not be used to check for adequate earthing and safety of use. if appliances develop a fault whilst plugged into a socket with a poor earth, they could become live resulting in a fire or fatal electric shock.

The EZ150 measures the impedance in bands using indicator lights. This is an “advanced” socket tester as described by the Health and Safety Executive.

The comparison feature allows values between 1mA and 20mA to be set and the meter will beep above this level. This triggering allows you to identify the time of high leakage currents and so helps identify the offending equipment.

Earth leakage clamps operate by clamping around both the live and neutral conductors and measuring the difference between the currents flowing, allowing the “leakage value” to be calculated.

Alternatively clamping around the earth conductor will also display the earth leakage current.
